Today wrapped up opening week of the Grad School sequel, 2 Grad 2 School. Unlike most sequels, this one doesn’t suck. In fact, it’s pretty amazing. And considering it’s only the first week and all we’ve done is review the syllabus, that’s saying something.
First up was Game Research with Lindsay Grace. Yes, that Lindsay Grace. As the name would imply, it’s a class all about conducting good research in the area of gaming. I’m not saying there was a heavenly beam of light or a hallelujah chorus, but there could have been. I definitely felt at home.
Second, I had 3D Modeling. This was the class I was most nervous for and remains to be so. My artistic and design skills extend only so far as LoL Cats and the occasional gif, so this will definitely be stretching some new parts of my brain. Something unique about this class is that it is itself structured as an RPG, something I’ve heard about but never experienced.
Then there’s Game Development. Day one we watched video of the professor speed running Mario because, you know, research. A game engine, some new coding language, tons of design choices, and don’t even get me started on the geometry… But I did figure out how to make a ball drop and roll down a plank, which was pretty cool.
Although I really wasn’t sure what to expect going in to this, I am so excited that I am. The professors are amazing, my two other lady Fellows are ridiculously awesome, and going from a restrictive hierarchy-based psych environment to a more collaborative and free-form one is quite a liberating feeling.
